What is a U.S. Medical Residency Fellowship?

So you’ve completed Residency but you still want to fine-tune your skills in your particular specialty, well then a fellowship is what you need!

U.S. medical fellowships are further training programs for resident physicians who’ve completed their residency and seek to acquire more subspecialty training in the field that they want to specialize in. Specialty and sub-specialty fellowship certifications have become so in vogue that 73 % of US doctors have them in their possession. Make no mistake fellowships can raise a physician’s yearly salary by $50,000 to $200,000 a year. And they are getting more competitive each year. Internal medicine fellowships are in subspecialties like nephrology, cardiology, hemotology oncology, and gastrointestinal. Even family medicine has fellowship in sports medicine and addiction medicine.

Fellowships aptly add another layer of finesse to a physician’s training and once part of a fellowship program these physicians are called “fellows”. To apply for fellowship you must complete an ACGME accredited residency and submit an ERAS application to the Specialties Match Service, a the branch of the NRMP (National Residency Match Program).

An interview would be set up and it’s vital to present yourself in the best light and have prior knowledge of the fellowship programs you are applying to. Enlightening them on why you want to specialize in this field of medicine shows your passion and path. Once you get an interview, publications, where you did your residency, USMLE scores, and impressive LORs are your ticket to be a fellow.

During the 2020 pandemic resident doctors could not get enough diversified rotations in their specialty due to the high demand of covid patients and the need of physicians to take on the patient load. Due to this some residents might find it hard to get great LORs, to be able to apply for fellowship. Here at Residents Medical we can provide you the resources you need to get the fellowship of your choice by working in research in an actual fellowship program, helping to get publication in that competitive field. Working with a number of hospitals with home ground and across the pond we can find you spot to get you to the top.
