Navigating Post Match – A Guide to US Residency Success

Even if you did not match, there is still opportunity to land your dream residency. Post-match is a unique process which offers a second chance for unmatched applicants to secure their desired spot in a residency program. The post-match period can be an emotional rollercoaster for medical graduates who did not secure a residency position initially. However, it’s crucial to view this as an opportunity rather than a setback. Here are some key information and tips, that could streamline your post-match process if needed.

Walk in with the Right Mindset

It’s important to understand that the post-match process is fast paced, typically only lasting a few days. Once your initial applications are due early March, it could be worthwhile to thoroughly read through these processes and rules. Be open to exploring programs that may not have been on your initial list. Additionally, familiarize yourself with some post-match data and trends from past years. For instance, there were 2,658 unfilled positions in post-match last year. Certain programs, like Emergency Medicine, often have unfilled positions in post-match, whereas other programs, like OB/GYN, are less accessible. Knowing these facts can help you better control your outcome!

Research Programs Thoroughly

Once post-match is underway, the first step is to thoroughly research programs that have unfilled positions. Are there any that align with your desired specialties and skill sets? If not, consider how your experience, clinical work, and connections could complement other available specialties as well. Catering your materials to the specialty is key, and a practice that should always be followed. Take advantage of resources such as NRMP’s Residency Program Explorer and program websites to gather the necessary information.

Update Application Materials

Let this be an opportunity to reconsider your prior application. Were there elements that could have been improved? Be sure to polish your resume, personal statement, and letters of recommendation, considering where they connected and perhaps didn’t with Program Directors. Make sure to tailor your documents to highlight relevant skills, experiences, and achievements for any new specialties you may now be pursuing. And remember, this is no time to be down on yourself, this is another opportunity to connect with leaders of your field and wow them!

Prepare for Interviews

The post-match process can be notorious for its rapid-fire interviews. Be sure to practice common interview questions, as well as questions that may be related to your new specialty choices. Be prepared to discuss any gaps in your application or reasons for pursuing a particular program. And remember, be enthusiastic! Let the interviewers know your excitement for this specialty and their program.

Consider Transitional or Preliminary Programs

These yearlong programs can be a stepping-stone to your desired specialty. While these positions may not be your ultimate goal, they offer the opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience and increase your chances of securing a more specialized residency in the future.

Conclusion

While the post-match process can be challenging, it is a crucial opportunity to secure that residency position. By approaching this period with a strategic mindset, thorough research, and a proactive attitude, you can maximize your chances of finding a suitable match and advancing in your medical career. Remember, resilience and adaptability are key during this period.
