The USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) exams, also known as the "Board Examinations" consist of a three-step process. Regardless of whether you are a U.S. Medical School graduate or an International Medical School graduate, most if medical schools require at least the successful completion of USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2, which is a two part examination containing Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS) components in order to graduate.
This exam is also a prerequisite for international and foreign medical graduates in order to apply to U.S. residency programs. According to the 2018 NRMP Program Director Survey, the number one factor that is considered is an applicant's Step 1 and Step 2 scores. Program coordinators are overwhelmed with the number of residency applicants so high test scores make it easier to weed out the thousands of applicants applying for a handful of residency slots.
For international and foreign medical graduates, the additional step of successfully completing of USMLE Step 3 is a deciding factor on whether to invite the candidate for a residency interview.
Unfortunately, most International Medical Schools do not properly prepare their medical students for this part of the exam.
